The setting of Strawberry Marshmallow, according to the manga, is Japan's Hamamatsu. For instance, Ana's dog Frusciante is named after John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, while episode eight of the anime features two goldfish with the names Richard and James. The title itself was influenced by Tamio Okuda's track "Mashimaro," a Japanese rock song.
