The enigmatic "armed gang" known as the Zai has attacked Earth with weaponry that is extraordinarily highly developed and far more powerful than any Terran military equipment. When Shanghai is attacked by the Zai, a young Chinese-Japanese adolescent called Kei Narutani and his Chinese buddy Minghua are forcibly evacuated to Japan. Kei unexpectedly sees the Zai being repelled by an odd airplane as they attempt to depart by water. A number of Zai fighters then start to sink the evacuation fleet. Kei rushes to the pilot's rescue when the jet crashes, but he is shocked to see a lovely girl at the controls. After reaching Japan, Kei starts looking into the history of the odd plane, but soon after he is arrested by operatives from the Japanese secret agency. They reveal to him that it was a Swedish fighter that had been modified with unique JASDF-developed technology. HiMAT (Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology) and EPCM (Electronic Perceptory Countermeasures) were reverse-engineered and applied to existing fighter models, code-named "Daughters," in order to combat the Zai. However, for this technology to work properly, an autonomous interface unit called "Anima," which is an android unit shaped like human-like girls made from salvaged Zai parts, is needed. Such a "Anima" unit is the girl Kei met, named Gripen (after the aircraft she flies), who developed an emotional bond with him after he rescued her. Her project manager recognizes that effect and offers Kei to join the Anima project to work alongside Gripen in order to improve their flight capabilities and keep Anima from being cancelled.,
