Gedächtnis and Drossel von Flügel, the series' central characters, live in a massive manor that is surrounded by what appears to be a robot-populated city. Beyond that city, however, is a desert that humanity's armies progressively advance through over the course of the series' 144-year setting. Gedächtnis is Drossel's servant and guardian because she made a promise to keep her safe to her deceased father. Drossel treats him in a way that is reminiscent of the stereotypical "spoiled princess." The fact that Gedächtnis waits for Drossel to come at first and is addressed by a name Drossel presumably chooses at random is a recurrent joke in the series (although some, such as Sancho Panza and Rasputin, infer an unambiguously subservient status upon him). Gedächtnis then makes an attempt to gently and butcher-like remind Drossel of his name, but she urges him not to interrupt. Drossel's claim that she practices karate despite the fact that her movements are clearly capoeira is another running joke.
