PLOT

The series' central myth centers on a Queen who justly and wisely governs a universe. She maintains the stability of the different planets in her domain and the contentment of her people by balancing elemental forces with the aid of nine Guardians. But as time passes, the Queen's and the Guardians' influence dwindles, necessitating the appointment of replacements. The main character in the first game, titled Angelique, is a 17-year-old named Angelique Limoges who has been picked as one of two contenders from the Royal Smallney Girls' Academy to succeed the present Queen. To start her final exam, she is taken to the Flying City. Each contender is allocated a piece of land to settle. Whoever completes populating their territory first wins and succeeds as Queen. The nine Guardians who assist in the process utilize their abilities to either make the inhabitants of the candidate's home country happy or wreak havoc on the homes of their rivals. The candidates can fall in love while making friends with the Guardians along the way. They will live happily ever after even if they chose love instead of the chance to become Queen. Later books in the series have a longer plot, although the protagonists in the majority of them are girls named Angelique or its abbreviation (Enju or Ange), with ever-expanding casts of people. In later titles, the number of potential love interests rises to 19 characters (in Angelique Trois and Angelique Etoile).
