The drama series is set at Starlight Academy, a prestigious middle and high school where girls train to become idols and compete in live performances, fashion shows, and theatre productions. Players use Aikatsu cards, special cards that feature digitalized outfits and accessories from various manufacturers that are used in their auditions, to take part in these casting calls. Choosing the appropriate set of cards can have a big impact on how successful they are. Players are given the position of a new student in the video games, who must train to become an idol and rise to the top. The anime series centers on a young woman named Ichigo Hoshimiya, who enrolls in Starlight Academy with her best friend Aoi Kiriya after being moved by a performance by popular idol Mizuki Kanzaki. Ichigo and Aoi spend each day practicing for auditions with their classmate Ran Shibuki with the goal of becoming well-known idols. The second season opens with Ichigo returning to Starlight Academy after living in America, where she now befriends and competes with pupils from Dream Academy, a new idol school that houses Seira Otoshiro and her other idols. The third season focuses on a new generation and features Akari Zora and her friends, a young woman chosen by Ichigo to enroll in Starlight Academy. Both the Partner's Cup and the Great Starlight School Festival see their greatest efforts. The fourth season is focused on Akari's new group, Luminas, which includes Sumire Hikami and Hinaki Shinjo, touring the country and meeting idols from all around Japan. These gatherings help them get ready for the major competition, the Starlight Queen Cup.
