PLOT
At Umesato Junior High School, delinquents frequently make fun of Haruyuki "Haru" Arita, a short, overweight boy. In order to escape the misery of reality, he goes onto the school's local network cyberspace and plays a lonely game of virtual squash. His natural talent for video games attracts the attention of Kuroyukihime, the school's well-liked, brilliant, and gorgeous female student council vice-president. Kuroyukihime introduces Haruyuki to Brain Burst, a covert program that can speed up the human brain process to the point that time stops after assisting him in fighting the criminals. Soon after, Haruyuki discovers that Brain Burst is more than just a computer program; rather, it is an augmented-reality massively multiplayer online (ARMMO) fighting game in which players engage in bloody battles to earn burst points, which can then be used to purchase acceleration powers in the real world. After beating the "Six Kings of Pure Color," Kuroyukihime enlists Haruyuki's assistance to advance to level 10 in Brain Burst so that she can meet the game's inventor and discover its true purpose. Haru and Kuroyukihime, who go by the identities "Silver Crow" and "Black Lotus," assemble reliable allies and combat cunning foes for every difficulty they encounter in the accelerated world. As they work toward achieving their ultimate goal—to advance to the game's highest level and meet the creator, who will reveal the reason the game was made and its true purpose—their friendship gets deeper.
